If It's Thursday ...

If it's Thursday, it must be trash day. Do you think I remembered that last night? Noooo ... and when I open the shades in the living room to let in the glorious sunlight, I see all kinds of trash barrels outside. Yes, I think I missed the truck, but I dragged my barrel to the curb anyway. In the "old" days (on Mondays!!) when they emptied the barrel, they left the top open. This new truck puts it back down with the top neatly closed. So you can't tell if it has been emptied or not. Life is difficult for the trash challenged. (I was too late.)

This is my new favorite "commercial." There is a real Sam Adams commercial first; don't miss the SNL skit after it.

I know people who have this same reaction to flavored coffees, lol.

ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ

I washed my hair yesterday. Yeah, I know, big deal. My point is, I let it air dry and it was kinda o.k. with lots of curls. I get up this morning and it looks like I stuck my hand in a light socket. Somehow the curls stretched out, but are still sticking out a la Medusa. Makes me really glad for the mask. (Although people seem to have no problem recognizing me. It must be the queen size.)

Luckily, Emily likes the snow suit I sent for J. I couldn't resist -- it has teddy bear ears on the hood. I got the black thinking he's a cool urban young man (instead of red) since he will be two years old in February. The kid's growing like a weed and has become a master of manipulation. I guess that's toddlers' job. They always manage to excel at pushing their parents around.

(((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((

I don't know about you, but I am darn sick and tired of not only political ads, but politicians asking me for money. I have long believed that we should drastically limit campaign spending and the money they can legally collect. I got an email today from 'Nancy Pelosi' titled "Not asking for money." This included a 'survey' asking if you support Trump. And at the end, lo and behold, the only way to register your 'survey' is to include a donation. This burns me up. And if the Democrats lose this election by thinking we are the same mentality of that other mob, I am going to be royally ticked off.

@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@

Here it is Saturday and what do I have to show for myself? Not much. However, I have taken a couple of walks on the bike trail (Amherst to Hadley).

                                                       Moo.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

Rummaging around the house, I found two more quilt tops that need finishing and I still have the yellow and blue one I made in California as well.

This one is called Blueberries.

Yes, I know it's all wrinkly. I'm working on that but in the meantime, I'm figuring out the back. So far it's mainly white, but I am going to add a quilter's block or two using very dark green batik (it looks like black) and a patterned fabric. Which is why I'm very happy that I ordered a chalk pen. Last time, drawing the diagonal on the squares was almost painful. I was using a white 'sewer's pencil.' It pulled the fabric and didn't want to really make a good line.

My first hurdle, however, is getting the darn package open.

I love my kitchen scissors! It can cut up chicken and open these ridiculously hard to open packages! And, yes, the pen works well. I'm on my way making half squares.

*******************************************************

There's one other thing I have been working on sporadically.

It's a knit blanket I call Sand and Surf. Yeah, I know, why name a blanket? It's just what the colors reminded me of. And that reminds me that I haven't visited the ocean. I should do that. Hmmm ... Boston or Connecticut? Maybe both. I'll pack a lunch. But not today.

I hope you all have a great week. The sun just came out so I may have to go outside and work in front yard. I've got some phlox seeds to plant. Cheers!

My Dryer Lint Is Blue

 October 9, 2020

Yup, I finished washing and drying the rest of the blue fabric -- most of it for the By the Shore Quilt. However, I am forging ahead on the blue quilt back.

Ever had those days when you feel as if you can't do anything right? Well, I have had too many of those lately and have been stitch ripping for hours at a time. Jeanne came to my rescue and invited me to her house for some instruction. Imagine my delight to see the pink quilt in progress. I was thrilled -- Jeanne let me do some quilting! It's a 'wide meandering' stitch so it's all hand guided. (You can program the machine to do certain designs such as ferns and straight squares and you have to watch it with no hands on.)

Clipping an Errant Thread

Hand Guiding Quilted Swirls

I thought this wall hanging was super. I can't remember the price but if you are interested in buying anything from Jeanne, go to Hummingbird Garden Quilts.

Pegs and cards are in the bag that Jeanne has stitched. I'm wondering if I should brush up on cribbage and get a board for Mom.

Who can resist this little guy? I think I liked the owl better (not shown) and there's also a Raggety Ann. Jeanne is so talented!

'When did you last clean your machine?' Jeanne asked. 'Um, like never.' So I promised to do that first thing when I got home. Which is when I realized I didn't have any machine oil, not even any WD40. And the little screwdriver I have fits the Featherweight (1950 vintage machine), but is too small for this one. That meant a trip to Joann's where they have the oil but no screwdriver. Then it was on to Target which did not have any short screwdrivers. So I ended up buying a drill bit kit with the flat head that I need.

Meanwhile, back at the ranch, I find that I already have a flat head tip that goes into a screw driver that takes multiple bits. Using pliers instead of a handle, I use this flat head bit and get the face plate off. But I couldn't figure out how to get the bobbin casing out, so I head to YouTube. The lady was very informative, including telling me to use the screwdriver that came with the machine. It's the metal triangle in the pouch with needles, bobbins, and spare parts that came with the machine. Who knew?! They could have at least labeled it "screwdriver"! Sheesh.

I took some photos on the way back from Jeanne's house. I also bought a cauliflower at the roadside farm stand that I passed.

I made some blueberry muffins this morning. That reminds me that it's time for a muffin and tea! Have a great weekend. Cheers!

Don't Bleed on the Quilt

 Monday 9/28/2020

Bet you never knew quilting is a blood sport. A while ago, I was re-threading the machine when I inadvisably got my finger caught on the needle. My natural reaction was to say, "Aggggh!" and pull my finger up and away. Nope, I had to push my finger down with the other hand to free it.

Which is why today I shouldn't have been surprised that my reaction wasn't a good thing. I was holding a pincushion magnet. (It's great for picking up pins from the floor.) It started to slip out of my hands so I reacted and grabbed it -- thereby making my hand looking like a porcupine. Since it's a magnet, some of the pins are upside down, points up. No, I did not bleed on the quilt.

I'm in the home stretch of the blue quilt top.

&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&

Phyllis and I decided to take a walk at Groff Park to see the new sprinklers for the kids to run through. Of course, the water is turned off and she offered to spit so I could get the full effect. I declined her generous offer.

I think all of the shapes above shoot streams of water.

I really liked the recycling fish!

Fall is here, early. I think the colors are early due to the drought.

Wow! It's 3 p.m. Time for lunch. See you later. And it was egg salad on romaine lettuce. Did I tell you I love the egg cooker that Emily gave to me?

Wednesday 9-30-2020

It has been raining since yesterday. The sun is supposed to come out in the afternoon, and it's trying now at 11:30 a.m. Of course, I washed my house with a bleach solution and they said, 'Don't apply when it's supposed to rain.' We had had a drought for so long ... I hope the bleach worked on the north side mold.

Update: only one section of the house looks good. The rest is not green anymore, but it is black. Ugh. It looks like the rain will start up again, so I'm going to wait before reapplying -- and scrubbing.

10/1/2020

Happy October! The blue quilt top is finished as of yesterday. Now on to the bottom.

I am so happy! By the Shore, a quilt made in California last winter, has been sold! At the moment, it's only a quilt top, but that can be rectified pretty quickly with the help of my favorite longarm quilter

Looking for a good home. This quilt top yearns to be finished. $180.

Standing at the kitchen counter yesterday, I hear rustling. Thinking I'm imagining it, I go back to cooking. Then it happens again. This time, the rustling sound is followed by a little pop. Puzzled, I look down at a piece of aluminum foil which contains a small stalk of large phlox seeds, still on the plant.

It was time. The seed pods were popping one by one and bouncing out of the loosely closed foil. And it continued for another half hour or so while I was in the living room sewing. Every time I heard a pop, I giggled. Ain't nature grand? Now I have to plant those suckers.

&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&

Time to wrap this up. Beyond everyday living, I'm going to attempt chemical stump removal. Will keep you posted.

No, I'm not raking any %^&* leaves. They are pretty when they are on the trees, not so much when they are on the ground. Besides, my allergies have kicked up big time and it's not a pretty sight when I rake and my nose dribbles!

Have a wonderful week/month/year. We can do this. Life is good.

My Trash Is Pink

9-15-20        Tuesday

And my clothing is covered with snippets of thread. It's 10:30 a.m. and time for a coffee break. I have been working on the pink quilt since 8:00 a.m.

On August 26, I began washing fabric for this quilt (and another). That was followed by lots of ironing. Then cutting squares, constructing blocks. Sewing. And sewing.

I've always said that I "grow" my quilts. I guess that really means the design is fluid. Which is why I just spent a few minutes stitch ripping. In a burst of enthusiasm, I had attached a block too soon, gumming up what would follow. Now all is right and I'm in the home stretch of finishing the back.

Red Dog Landscaping is here today, chopping and trimming bushes and trees. Unfortunately, now I can see how badly I need the back (north side) of the house washed. The daffodil yellow of the siding there is green. Sigh. Maybe I'll see what Lowe's has for a pressure washer.

Wednesday here.

Top of pink quilt. The sides are light pink (not white).

Bottom of pink quilt.

Here is a detail of the unicorns on the front.

And here is a detail of part of the back of the quilt. This is for when she's a bit older!

So the quilt making has been a whirlwind marathon for me. I have never made a quilt so large and so quickly! It's a twin size with a 12 inch drop. Now I have to go make the blue quilt. However, I'm not going to cut as many squares as I did last time -- I have a lot leftover! I'm hoping Emily can use them. She's thinking of making a quilt for the second daughter of her friends.  But right now, I'm goofing off writing to you.

The weather today was fantastic. It was sunny and in the low 70s with a gusty breeze. Nancy and I went for a walk on the bike trail that I am convinced is at least a mile if not a bit longer. The photo below is from another day's walk when it was cloudy.

######################################################

Today was (hopefully) my final time at the dentist for a while. I have the permanent crown cemented in. Boy, it's yucky -- they make you swish with hydrogen peroxide. And you can't spit it out, they suction it out. The dental assistant today was very clunky using the sucking thing and she scuffed up the inside of my mouth. I'm glad that's over with. And my pocketbook took a hefty dent. Luckily, I had paid half last time. I'm glad I hadn't paid the whole thing because the temporary crown fell out twice! I'm really glad I didn't swallow it.

******************************************************

Did you know Aldis has corned beef in a can? It's o.k. I guess you could call it the corned beef equivalent of Spam. It's almost the texture of a pate. (Accent over the e.) It is, however, way too salty if you put spicy brown mustard on it. And it needs to be heated -- unless you're a fan of congealed fat on the edges.

)))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))

I'm sitting here listening to the frogs and crickets. The front door is open because it's 59 degrees outside. I may stay in bed a long time tomorrow because it's so comfy and warm when the morning is chilly. But, wow, those frogs sure sing a robust song!

ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ

Thursday

Who knew? For some reason, I was awake at 6 a.m. and shortly later I hear the back up beep of a big truck. What? It was the recycling truck. I had lost a whole day, thinking it was only Wednesday. (Yes, I went back and changed the days on here.) So I threw on a sweater (since it's 59 F.) and put the trash and recycling to the curb. The recycling truck driver tooted at me. I thought it was a friendly hello (at 6:30 a.m.!), but I see that he's waving me over. I had missed recycling on my side of the street so he told me to bring the barrel across to the other side. I did and all was well. I wonder where that day went that I missed it ...

I have washed my hands many times and they still stink -- of perfumed dryer sheets. Somebody told me that mice hate that scent (as I do too) so I scattered them around my car in the garage. I'm hoping to avoid having the mice nest in the car's air filter. Hoo boy! Is the scent ever strong! No wonder I use unscented on my clothes.

I also got a flu shot. Two weeks ago, my doctor's office told me to call this week for an appointment. Today they said to call next week as they hadn't set up their flu clinic yet. The CVS pharmacy was doing a land office business giving flu shots.

And I am now the proud owner of a sprayer and a jug of vinyl siding cleaner. Oh, yes, and a long broom for scrubbing the house should it need it in addition to the cleaner. Don't know if I'll get to it tomorrow or not because I'm going to Emily's.

Vespers, in the church parking lot, were very nice. I was surprised at how many people recognized me in a mask and it was lovely at how many cheery greetings we all got. One woman didn't know that I was back from California. I had left her two messages and figured she wasn't interested. Tonight she said she definitely would have called if she had thought I was back. Which brings up the question of why she didn't call and ask. The phone reaches to California ...

We all brought our own chairs and I was very thankful that I didn't land on my ass. The back of my lawn chair is seriously frayed.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Friday

Nope, nope, nope. It's too chilly and cloudy today to try to wash the green off my house. 57 F. is too cold to get soaked with cold water. You know and I know, I will end up soaking wet. Which reminds me that I have to hunt up clothing that I don't mind if it gets bleached. Someone told me that those vinyl cleaning solutions are just bleach but I couldn't deal with putting straight bleach on the house.

I made some blueberry scones this morning. Truth be told, I forgot to put in the Swerve (artificial sugar). There it was sitting on the counter, unused. So I put some on top and let it melt in a bit. Tastes like a scone in muffin shape!

Keto Dutch Baby Pancakes

1 Tbs. butter or coconut oil

3 large eggs

3/4 C. unsweetened almond milk

1/4 protein whey isolate OR egg white powder

1 tsp. baking powder

1/4 tsp. salt

1/2 tsp. vanilla

1/4 C. Swerve

Preheat the oven to 425 F. Melt the butter in a cast iron pan (I used a baking pan). Put the rest of the ingredients in a blender for about 1 minute until foamy.

Bake 18 to 20 minutes. After 15 minutes, poke holes in it so it won't fall when it cools.  Makes 2 servings.

Dutch Baby

It's spongy inside and yummy! Of course, it would be even better with maple syrup and I found a recipe for homemade 'maple syrup,' but I haven't attempted it yet.

Have a great weekend! Cheers!

September Breeze

Today (August 31) I woke up to a wonderfully cool (in the 60s) sunny day. There is a slight breeze and it reminded me of beginning Fall.

Some of you guys will not know of this, but many women can relate to that one particular moment in childbirth  where you yell (or think), "I'm not ready for this! I'm done!" That moment comes after nine months of happy anticipation, after hours of labor, after a lot of pain. Of course, that is when the doctor or husband who is far enough away to not get slugged, says, "What are you gonna do -- leave?"

And that was my second thought: I'm not ready for September! So I have decided to enjoy it, come what may.

Normally, out little town fills to overflowing with college students in September. This year, not so much. There are quite a few students who have come back and some are renting houses off campus. They are here, we have seen them partying on porches (no masks) and in the supermarkets. (Masks are required in all public places, such as supermarkets and stores.) I have seen a bevy of Amherst College students outside, with masks on. I can only think The College has very strict guidelines. The University of Massachusetts has strict guidelines for those who chose to live on campus. For the off-campus students -- the University doesn't care. It has been this way for years: the University never took any responsibility for huge, out of control, parties and binge drinking. (The University pays no taxes, btw.)

Anyway, it's a lovely day!

&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&

I have become driven making a quilt. It's one of two for a commission. I love making quilts for people who give me an idea of the personality of the recipient and then they let me run with my own design. I have never understood artists who disparage clients who want a certain color scheme to make the painting go with their living room or another room. Is the artist making the work for only their own amusement?

You might know that I'm fascinated with process. I love, love, love watching glass blowers -- and painters and quilters, and, and, and ... Here's my process so far.

Buy fabric. Since I'm addicted to fabric, I have tried to close the buying floodgates. This is the first time in over two years that I have bought fabric. I'm working on it. It's way too easy to order online. Sigh.

All of the fabric must be washed, dried and ironed. Why? For one thing, to get the "shop dirt" out, but really to shrink it and make it as color fast as possible. (I use special fabric sheets that collect excess dye in the wash.)

Then I cut 4.5 inch squares. A lot of them.

Next I put two squares together, one light and one dark, and draw a diagonal line. Then I stitch a 1/4 inch seam to the right and left of that line. The next step is to cut that diagonal line, producing two squares consisting of two half squares (triangles). All seams must be pressed. And if you add two more, and stitch them all together, you get a diamond in a square. Or not, depending on how you orient the colors.

Did I mention that all the corners (above) have to be snipped off? Then all seams need to be pressed.

Below it the "or not" alternative to a diamond in a square. I think quilters call this a spool of thread, but I think of it as a butterfly. As nice as the batik (below) is, the colors were fighting with the polka dots above. So the squares in the below color range will go on the back. (The two different color tones were jarring to me. I know that's weird, but I'm kind of a color savant -- according to Cathy, lol. She's a much better technical quilter than I, but she has known to ask my advice on color.)

That's probably more than you wanted to know, but I needed a break. I have used up one complete spool of thread and two bobbins. (I just wound 3 more bobbins. I hate running out!) Now I have to go check my mailbox for more fabric. Toodles.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
Last Wednesday was the dental appointment to get my brand new crown. (This tooth has not been right since last March.) I had to go 4 weeks with the temporary tooth because I had a cold right before my appointment and they didn't want me near them.

Nope, the new crown didn't fit. The temp. tooth went back on. They made an appointment for me to come back in two weeks. On Friday, the temp. fell off. I go in tomorrow to get the temp. put back on. Sigh.

%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%

Thanks to an extremely generous friend who gave me her "old" phone. She also has been guiding me in how to use it! Today I figured out how to upload photos to Google Photo which makes it super easy to put photos into these blogs. I am so happy to have a cell phone that works the way it should!

Outside of the Munson Memorial Library. I took this photo when I brought the Hot Spot (aka Puck) back. They loan hot spots so you can bring your own wifi with you! Neat, huh?

ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ

Well, it's here: September 1st. I began my day speaking with an Xfinity Customer Service person. Last night, my living room TV went kaput in that it's getting zero cable signal. Todd has determined that my new box (for cable) is no longer working. I've got  technician coming between 12 and 2:00 p.m I also have a dentist appointment at 2 p.m. to replace my temp. tooth.  It's the little things that will get ya.

%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%

Interesting new breakfast recipe from Maria Emmerich:

Breakfast Rosti

2 slices of bacon, diced
2 Tbs. coconut oil
1 cup thinly sliced mushrooms
1/4 cup green onions (I used a red onion)
1 cup shredded cabbage
1 large egg, beaten
diced garlic to taste
salt, pepper

Cook the bacon in 1 Tbs. coconut oil until crispy. (Use a large cast iron skillet if you have it.) Add garlic, onions, coconut oil and
mushrooms and saute until golden. In a bowl, add egg, salt, pepper to cabbage and coat the cabbage. Add cabbage to frypan and cook until crispy on the bottom. Turn over with spatula and finish cooking. Serves 2.

)))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))

No, there was no fabric in the mail yesterday. Phooey. I'm waiting on some cartoon characters. Oddly enough, you can't just leave a hole and insert it later. (No fabric in the mail today either.)

The cable guy came today. Boy, is my face red. I had piled fabric on a chair and it interrupted the cable box signal. Luckily, he cancelled the call because they would have had to charge me ...

Got my temporary tooth put back in. The dentists' office was so busy, we were waiting out in the parking lot. Two college aged boys were running back and forth checking in patients, checking to see if the lobby was empty yet, and taking temperatures. It was busy!

###################################################################################

The Mom of the little girl who will get the pink quilt said she liked the batik. So we have more batik. (The original batik plus the other fabric just didn't work because the second fabric was the wrong tone.)

%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%

Woo hoo! I found the voice mail on my new phone! Now I have to turn back on all of the annoying sounds. The dentist's office left a voice mail and I never knew it. Those sounds were driving me crazy. Sigh.

&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&

Did I mention I'm making two quilts? One for a girl, one for a boy. So while I'm waiting for more fabric for the girl ...

******************************************************

I'm going back to sewing now. It's rainy and I am SO grateful that I have an Ott Light. It somehow gives a 'clean' light without the yellow that you get with energy saving and florescent bulbs. You can see true colors.

I hope you have a great week! Be kind to yourself and be well.

Who'd a Thunk It?

Thursday, August 20, 2020

Yesterday, Wednesday, I went to get the oil changed in my car. I already knew it was going to be more than the advertised $30 price on the sign due to synthetic oil. But I didn't count on having to replace two filters.

When the guy came out with the old ones, it was readily apparent that mice had made a bunk house out of both. So the $65 oil change came up to $130 with the addition of the filters. I asked the fellow if there was a way to prevent the invasion of the mice. (I have known for years that mice use my garage all winter, if not longer.)  He said they could put a wire mesh screen over the reebersad and protect the whatsit. I asked how much that would cost.

"Oh, the screen is free. We get a big roll of it and it's only a little piece. But the labor is two hours at $85 each."  I'll replace the filters next summer.

%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%

The Comcast (Xfinity) technician just left. Boy, am I happy with his work! He started out with the box outside in the front, ascertaining that I was on a three way split, with a sloppy connection. He fixed that. Then he went around to the back yard and re-did all of that too long cable and lousy connection. Then downstairs, checking the cable in the cellar. Then he replaced the old TV box cut off about 3 feet of extraneous wire, replaced the modem, again trimming excess (coiled) wire. And now everything is ship shape and my modem speed is up to 100 (from about 10). He even checked to make sure that all of my devices worked (computer, TV, Harmony remote) before he left. Yipppee!

I have to admit I had to giggle a bit when he had to go outside to get his cell phone to work. So there! It's not me. I really do live in the black hole of cell phone service.

I also found out the line that "customer service" was feeding me (on the phone) was hooey. That was the one saying they don't send out  a tech unless there is NO service. She even read me a 2 paragraph statement to that effect.

Packing up my 'puter now to go to Emily's for some more baby sitting. I've already loaded my clothes and have packed up the food. Ciao!
&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&

8-23-20

Here it is Sunday already and it has been a whirlwind of dishes, laundry, baby wrangling, and watching superheroes on Netflix with Emily. I love J and his sweet smile but, boy, is that kid active. Nana here decided on Saturday to take him out of the cart and let him walk through Lowe's and the supermarket. He had to hold my hand and, luckily, he didn't seem to mind. But he was running! I'm sure I looked pretty funny trotting next to this kid. At first, he was in the shopping cart at the supermarket and some particularly bouncy music came on. He liked it and began chair dancing in the shopping cart. When he got down and was holding my hand, he continued dancing and twirling. It was fun to see joy in action!

We went to the farmers' market in Bolton, Massachusetts. It was on the Town Common and it was a lovely circular setup -- with a paved walk which was great for pushing J. in the stroller. Right after a diaper change, I took him for a walk on the grass while Emily talked to her weaver friend. (Her woven scarves are gorgeous!) Then it began to rain. "I'll take the kid, you take the stroller," Emily yelled as we ran for cover. We made it to a covered bandstand area just as the heavens opened up in a very heavy downpour.

The blue scarf glistens in the sunlight. Unfortunately, these scarves got wet in the downpour.

This is Angie, Emily's friend. Luckily, Emily brought the tent for her to use so she stayed dry during the rain.

I thought these gnomes were funny and I didn't see the masks until just now as I downloaded the photo.

These paper flowers were amazing and the woman had decorated each vase with something unusual -- a bow or a button, a painting, or a charm. Her bags were very colorful with a clear cellophane rectangle so you could see the bouquet inside.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

On Friday I drove from Worcester to Andover and got my hair cut by Sherylann. It looks great! And she got me some shampoo and conditioner for curly hair. The brand is milk shake so I hope I don't forget and drink it. (They don't call it conditioner, I forget what they call it. It's "product.")

*******************************************************
I was just reading Dan Pedersen's blog and he was talking about what's "enough" and what he doesn't have enough of.

Here's my partial list.

I have enough of

weeds
hot weather
dust kitties
rude people
politicians
clothing
quilting fabric
pounds

I need more

flowers, perennials
social interactions in person

You know what? I don't really have a lot of needs. How lucky am I to be healthy, (too) well fed, have a roof ... the list goes on. I am really rich. But most of my wealth in in friends. Thanks, People!

I hope you all have a great week and don't forget your masks. I bought a new one at the farmers' market thinking it was plain black and when Emily opened it up to wash it, she discovered that it's covered in black bling! Woo hoo, just my style!

Cheers.

Well, That Was Different

 First: a groaner.

Did you hear about the farmer who drowned in a vat of chickpeas?

They think it was hummuscide.

%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%Sunday

Last week, I spent Monday afternoon through Saturday afternoon at Emily's in Worcester. J was suspected to have a cold -- he had a drippy nose and the home daycare sent him home.

I only had to provide childcare for one full day while Emily worked from home. It turns out, he was having an allergy attack. (My car was covered in yellow pollen when I left.)

Trying to be a good Nana, I busied myself washing dishes, folding clothes, and cooking. I had just gone grocery shopping when Emily called, so I brought quite a bit of food with me. Oddly enough, neither Emily nor J wanted to try the kimchi.

J has learned the word "no" with appropriate head shaking, so suppertime has become an interesting exercise in "try this." Noodles with butter went over like a lead balloon. No pieces of roast chicken, no zucchini, no zoodles. Spinach was kind of funny: I put some chopped spinach in his mouth and he just let it fall out with a look of total disgust on his face. I hate to confess that we finally resorted to putting a tiny bit of ketchup on burger bites. I'm now calling ketchup "miracle juice." Otherwise, the kid would only eat string cheese and bananas and blueberries.

He's a lovely, smiling toddler. My favorite was to watch him dancing with a children's video. He really can cut a rug! He has decided to steer his little car with his belly. Actually, he has learned that if he pushes with his belly, it activates the voice. He has all kinds of talking toys and books. It can be downright cacophony with four different voices and sounds going at once.

Add in three cats, one of whom is a senior citizen who needs extra love, and it was a busy week for me! But I was glad to do it and I was glad the kid didn't have anything I would catch!

Zoodles for today's breakfast ramen (no ramen noodles).

Breakfast ramen

I never thought I would want one, but Emily gave me an egg cooker and I love it! It's a plastic dome that will hold six eggs and it will cook them either soft, medium, or hard boiled. The one above is medium. You put the eggs and some water in, plug it in and presto! perfectly cooked eggs. I'm in love.

Monday

I'm baaaaaack! Actually, I just went for groceries and as I drove into the garage, the drizzle became a downpour. Boy, do I love my attached garage! It was just a cloud burst so I don't know if it will turn the drought aside.

The prices are outrageous. The cheapest steak was London broil for $6.49/lb. A recipe I have calls for rib eye -- not for this cheap Yankee! (I don't remember the exact price but it was something in the area of $14.00/lb.) I did splurge, however, on crab in a jar. It was hand picked. (How else do the do it? Machines?) I'm not going to tell you the price because I'm ashamed, but I really needed a treat.

On my way home from Worcester, I got gas for $1.98/gallon and today around the corner from me it's $1.99/gal. (When I left last Monday, it was $2.07/gallon around the corner.)

Oh! It looks like a rainbow is coming. I can't see it unless I stand in the middle of my street and it's still raining a tad, so I'll let you imagine it.

Here; you can look at a sunset from another day.

I finally did it -- woo hoo! I won a game at Words with Friends!

Tuesday

Blink! At 3 a.m. I woke with a start and thought, "Did I turn on the chicken in the crock pot?!" Nope, I hadn't added the chicken broth either. After washing the pot, I started over with frozen chicken and went back to bed. That was after I googled it to be sure I couldn't cook chicken that had been at room temp for 9 hours. That was a big nope. Two hours max.

So this morning, I decided to make hollandaise sauce for my egg. Last time it was too lemony. Reading the directions, it said I could heat the oil on the stove (which I did last time) or in the microwave. DON'T HEAT OIL IN THE MICROWAVE. Unless you want a half cup of olive oil spewed all over. Sigh. (Thank God, I was making half the recipe.)

I'm beginning to get the memo. Today is going to be a difficult day. Let's see if I can turn this around.

I don't know how I missed this in Feb. 2014:

Facebook introduced dozens of options for users to identify their gender today - and although the social media giant said it would not be releasing a comprehensive list, ABC News has found at least 58 so far.

Previously, users had to identify themselves as male or female. They were also given the option of not answering or keeping their gender private.

User's can now select a "custom" gender option.

"There's going to be a lot of people for whom this is going to mean nothing, but for the few it does impact, it means the world," Facebook software engineer Brielle Harrison told the Associated Press. Harrison, who worked on the project, is in the process of gender transition, from male to female.

Facebook will also allow users to select between three pronouns: "him," "her" or "their."

The following are the 58 gender options identified by ABC News:

  • Androgyne
  • Androgynous

So I have figured out I'm a cisgender female. Big deal. It kind of makes me wish for the old Compuserve chat rooms. For you youngins, those were online "rooms" where you could chat in real time. Most rooms had a theme and some were actively trying to "date." This was well before match.com or any of those dating apps. I went into one room, identifying myself as male. Frankly, I was tired of guys with the fetching opening line of, 'Hey, baby, ya wanna?' But also, I wondered if I were a good enough writer to pull it off. Prior to that I wasn't looking for anything in the general rooms (no theme except maybe over 40 years old) except conversation with reasonably intelligent people -- and all I got were propositions. And, no, nobody had their pictures posted.

So, yes, everyone thought I was a man. It was sort of interesting, but I was disappointed in how everyone was fooled. All I had to do was compliment some women and they spilled their guts while I played the 'strong silent type' lacing my chat with a few jokes. Granted, this was years and years ago, but I believe it's still happening. I'm reminded of how one of the Sister Wives on TV was catfished. She thought she was having intimate conversations with a man and it turned out to be a woman who probably was after money, but I didn't watch more to find out the motive.

I love Google, but it's too easy to look things up and, er, digress.

Catfish is a term for someone pretending to be someone of a different gender to dupe another. Why is it called catfishing? Here's an explanation below:
"At the turn of the century cod fish were in much demand on the east coast. News of the tasty fish quickly spread across the country all the way to the west coast. There was however a problem. How could they get the cod fish across the country and still keep it fresh?
